ABOUT US
Who We Are?
HyperWrite was founded in Melbourne, Australia, by Alex Millar and Tony Self in 1993. Since that time, the company has changed as technology has changed.
The original role of the company was to provide consultancy and training services in the emerging field of hypertext. At the time, the main manifestation of hypertext was WinHelp (the Help format for Windows 3.0). HTML was yet to emerge from academia!
HyperWrite’s consultancy services transformed to take in HTML and Microsoft HTML Help technologies. Server-side delivery of content also became an important part of the business. Providing an outsourcing service for companies with insufficient inhouse skills allowed HyperWrite to grow in size, maintaining offices in Melbourne and Canberra.
In 2000, HyperWrite staff worked exclusively on a new media project for Asia-Inc (based in Singapore). On completion of this project, HyperWrite resumed operations on a very much smaller scale.
HyperWrite’s services are now focussed on training and strategic consultancy for Help and XML documentation technologies. The company is based in Melbourne.

Advice and Support
HyperWrite has always been an innovative and progressive company. We are an Internet-homed company, in that we no longer maintain a physical office. Our small team works from home or on-the-road. Our customers are located around Australia, and in a number of distant parts of the world.
Dr Tony Self is an internationally recognised expert in User Assistance, Help systems, structured authoring, document engineering and DITA XML. He’s been a technical writer since the 1980s.
Along the way, he’s taught technical communication at Swinburne University, got involved with the OASIS DITA Technical Committee, wrote The DITA Style Guide as part of his PhD project, won the ISTC Horace Hockley award for his contribution to technical communication, directed the tekom TCTrainNet programme, and delivered lectures and conference papers around the world.
Tony got into techcomm through working on aircraft manuals. Aviation and writing have always been passions, but writing tends to pay the bills and aviation creates the bills. He gravitated towards leading-edge documentation tools and techniques, and was involved in hypertext and computer-based training in the early days of those technologies. In 1993 he founded a hypertext documentation company in Melbourne, Australia, named HyperWrite, and still works under that company name.
Aviation remains a strong interest for Tony, and he gets to fly some amazing aircraft, including an 80 year old Tiger Moth, a classic Airtourer trainer, and a Super Decathlon aerobatic aircraft. When he can, Tony tries to merge his aviation and communication interests, and is a feature writer for Australian Flying magazine and Flight Safety Australia. He lives in Melbourne, Australia.
